The
Paris District Office of the Illinois Department of Transportation wishes
to announce the following update on the 11-mile reconstruction project of
I-70 in Clark
County
from the
North
Fork
of the
Embarrass
River,
just west of
Martinsville,
eastward to one mile west of Illinois
1,
near
Marshall:
Beginning
Monday, July 7, 2003
the contractors on this section will commence work on
Phase
II of this 11-mile reconstruction project. The first major operation will
be to place
concrete
barrier down the center of the newly reconstructed eastbound lanes of
I-70. This
operation,
which is expected to take 3 days, will then be followed by the shifting of
all I-70
traffic
from
Martinsville
to just west of Marshall, to a “head-to-head”
configuration on the eastbound pavement, with a
concrete barrier separating eastbound from westbound.
Traffic
shall remain in in this configuration until the completion of this project towards the
end of
October 2003. This
reconfiguration of the traffic movements within the project limits is to
allow
for the safe and efficient “complete” reconstruction of the westbound
pavement structure.
Lastly,
IDOT wishes again to remind motorists to please drive with heightened
awareness when they are approaching any construction zone, not only for
their own safety, but the safety of the workers as well.

:
Beginning
Monday, June 2, 2003
through Friday June 6th the contractor on this section will
begin
the process of removing the temporary concrete barriers that are presently
down the center of the westbound lanes.
During this operation westbound traffic will remain in the
westbound driving lane and eastbound traffic will be switched to the newly
reconstructed
eastbound driving lane. The relocated temporary concrete barrier will be
placed along the
inside shoulder of the eastbound lanes. The barrier will remain at this
location until after the
July 4 week at which time all traffic will be placed head-to-head in the
new eastbound lanes,
with the barrier placed between opposing lanes, to allow for the
reconstruction of the
westbound lanes of I-70.
From
June 9 through June 20 some preparatory work will be done before Stage II
commences
which will require closure of the westbound driving lane from Monday thru
Thursday
of each week, however both of the eastbound driving lanes will be open for
traffic
during
this time.
For
the July 4 weekend, all 4 lanes of I-70 within the project limits will be
open to traffic.
Immediately
following the holiday period, traffic will be placed head to head on the
eastbound
pavement with a barrier down the middle and shall remain in that
configuration
until
the completion of the project in October.
Lastly,
IDOT wishes again to remind motorists to please drive with heightened
awareness
when
they are approaching any construction zone not only for their own safety,
but the
safety
of the workers as well.

Clark
County, IL -- Reconstruction of a nearly 11 mile section of Interstate 70
in western Clark County will begin this week with the closure of two
bridges on local road systems, the Illinois Department of Transportation
has announced. A
$44.8 million project to rebuild I-70 from Marshall (mile marker 147) to
Martinsville (mile marker 136) will begin with the closure of County
Highway 6 (Cline Orchard Road) over I-70 on Thursday, August 1, and
Township Road 198 over I-70 on Friday, August 2. Both bridges will
be closed approximately six weeks in order to raise the bridges to
accommodate the new I-70 pavement. On
Monday, August 5, patching and resurfacing of I-70 in the area of the
Martinsville interchange will begin and traffic will be reduced to one
lane in each direction. During the remainder of the 2002
construction season, preliminary work will be performed on all overhead
structures in the 11 miles, as well as resurfacing the westbound lanes,
which will handle all traffic beginning next spring. In
March 2003 reconstruction of the highway will begin with the closure of
the eastbound lanes and all traffic switched to the westbound lanes.
The westbound lanes will then be rebuilt and traffic will be on the new
eastbound lanes. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by
October 2003. Currently
a 10-mile section of I-70 from Marshall to the Indiana line is being
reconstructed. That work should be completed this October. Motorists
are advised to slow down and drive with caution through the construction
zones.
